Origin of Udhagamandalam is a bit strange. The mention of the practice of this place is found in March 1821 in which an unknown journalist identifies it as the Wotokymund in the Madras Gazette. In the early days it was called Utaikaland. In Tamil, the village of Toda is called Manda. And the next words should be the disintegration of the local name of the northeast Flat Plate of Nilgiris. According to another opinion, the word "otaka" is the ablation of the local word oth-kal, which means one-stone. This can be due to a stone considered to be worshiped by Toda people. The Udhagamandalam name was changed during the British rule to Utaakanand, and shortened by Ooty.
History
Ooty is a centerpiece of the Nilgiri Mountains. Nilgiri means blue mountains. This name has been caused by the yellow euphoria of the Nilgiris trees, that every twelve years, the flowers of the blooming curry, which gives rise to the mountain slopes, are unknown. In other areas of India, it has found evidence of being in possession of any state or king, but no such evidence is found in the Ooty area. Tipu Sultan was the first king to expand its boundaries and build a cave structure to hide here.
This area was initially dominated by Toda and other community. They co-existed by doing business here. In his book Oatacamand, A History, Fredrik Price writes that earlier Toda people lived on an area known as the old Ooty. Later, the Toda people gave that part of the town to Coimbatore Governor John Sullivan. He later developed the town here and encouraged the cultivation of tea cinchona and teak tree here. Seeing the way the local tribes helped, other residents and self-helpers were impressed and thought to be in sync with the plantation and the rights of the local people. In the subsequent times, the local people were working to get the full justice related to their land rights. For this, British Savassi also punished them financially and fairly.
In 1799, the treaty of Srirangpatnam between Tapoo Sultan and the British resulted in the Nilgiri area under the British East India Company. Rev. 1603 Junko Farico was the first European to come here and wrote a note about this region and its people. Surveyor William Keys and McMahon visited the flat area in 1812. In 1818, the Vice-Officers, Mr. Wish and Kindersley visited the place and reported to the collector of Coimbatore about the experience of Jain Sullivan. In January 1819, John Sullivan traveled to the place where he settled on the island of Dadabati, north of Kotagiri. They came here again in May 1819 and started construction of their own bungalow next to Diablati, which was the first European home here.
John Seilva constructed the road from Siramgai to Dimapur in 1819 (near Mettupalayam) which was completed in May 1823. The road to Coonoor was held in 1830-32. Ooty was the summer capital of the small princely state of Madras Presidency and visited by the British Raj, today it has become a popular summer and weekend holiday resort. They were sent to Wellington, here and there for the airfare of soldiers. Wellington is still home to the Madras Regiment. This place is called unparalleled beauty and deep green valleys called the car as the queen of the hill stations.
